Forward deployed engineer job description: a template built from real postings
Every line of an FDE posting is a decision: how much of the week is code, how much travel is real, which level you are hiring and what the law says about pay.

A good forward deployed engineer job description answers five questions before a candidate has to ask: which customers the engineer will build for, how much of the week is production code, how much travel is real, which level you are hiring, and what it pays. The FDE postings that Palantir, OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Salesforce publish on their official job boards all ask for hands-on production code alongside customer work, put a number on travel, and print a pay range for US roles2,3,4,5,6. Below is a copy-ready template with the decision behind each line, a dated comparison of those postings, and the pay-disclosure rules of five states.
Still deciding whether you need the role? Start with our guide to hiring a forward deployed engineer. For where the team should report, see when the forward deployed engineering model pays off.
What should an FDE job description include?
Seven blocks, in this order:
- Role summary: customer type, outcome and reporting line.
- Responsibilities by deployment stage.
- Must-have and nice-to-have requirements, kept apart.
- The split between coding and customer work.
- Travel and on-site expectations.
- Level: FDE, senior FDE or FDE manager, one per posting.
- Pay range and benefits, in the posting itself.
Template text sits in boxes with [brackets] to fill in; the decision behind it follows.
How do published FDE job descriptions compare?
Five postings from the companies’ official job boards, checked on October 22, 2026. Each is one posting at one time; these companies run many FDE variants by city, industry and level, and ranges change.
Table 1 scrolls sideways. Swipe it, or focus it and use the arrow keys.
| Posting | Experience asked | Coding signal | Travel | Published pay |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Palantir, Forward Deployed Software Engineer, New York2 | 1+ years after college | Strong coder in Python, Java, C++, TypeScript or similar | Up to 25%, flexible by personal preference | $135,000 to $200,000 salary; stock units and sign-on bonus may be added |
| OpenAI, Forward Deployed Engineer, San Francisco3 | 5+ years, including customer-facing work | Writes and reviews production code, frontend and backend | Up to 50%; office 3 days a week | $185K to $300K salary, plus equity |
| Anthropic, Forward Deployed Engineer, London7 | 4+ years in a technical, customer-facing role | Python, plus production experience with LLMs | 25% to 50% | £225,000 to £255,000 annual salary |
| Google, Forward Deployed Engineer IV, Applied AI, Google Cloud5 | 8 years of software development | Lead developer; full-stack applications and Terraform | Up to 50%, listed as preferred | US $207,000 to $300,000, plus 20% bonus target and equity |
| Salesforce, Forward Deployed Engineer (Mid/Senior Level)6 | 3+ years (6 to 10 for senior); customer-facing delivery required | Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, Java or Apex; production experience required | About 25% | Base $88,970 to $287,910; $97,860 to $316,750 in California, New York and select metros |
Three patterns hold. None is a demo-and-handoff job: each asks for hands-on production code. Four of the five tie the role to the product, whether by sharing field feedback with Research and Product (OpenAI), codifying repeatable deployment patterns (Anthropic), turning field friction into reusable modules or feature requests (Google) or surfacing platform gaps (Salesforce)3,7,5,6. And three of the five pair the FDE with a separate strategy or engagement role: Palantir and Salesforce post Deployment Strategists who work alongside FDEs, and Anthropic’s FDE manager posting describes Engagement Managers who own delivery logistics and stakeholder management13,6,14.
How should the role summary and responsibilities read?
Role summary. As a Forward Deployed Engineer at [Company], you will embed with [customer type, such as regional banks or hospital systems] and take [product] from first conversation to production inside their systems. You will write and ship production code, lead the technical relationship with the customer’s engineers, and bring what you learn back to our product team. You will report to [title] in [Engineering / Product / Delivery].
The decision: name the customer and the reporting line. OpenAI’s healthcare FDE posting, for example, names payers, providers and health systems and the patient-data safeguards involved15. The reporting line tells a candidate whether this is an engineering job or a services job.
What you will do
- Discovery: work with customer users and engineers to find the workflow worth changing and the systems it depends on.
- Scoping: turn that into a plan with milestones, risks, and the customer’s security and procurement steps.
- Build: write production code in the customer’s environment: integrations, data pipelines, [AI applications or agents] and the evaluations that show they work.
- Rollout: take the system to production, measure adoption against the agreed outcome, and hand over something the customer can run.
- Feedback to product: turn repeated custom work into reusable components or feature requests for [product team].
The decision: organize duties by deployment stage, not as a list of skills. OpenAI’s posting uses a similar sequence, from discovery and technical scoping through system design, build and production rollout3, and Anthropic’s Staff FDE posting adds anticipating security and procurement gates4. A stage list shows the whole engagement and makes clear the job continues past the sale. Keep the last bullet only if someone will act on it; without an owner for turning field work into product, the role drifts toward services, a trade-off covered in our analysis of the forward deployed engineering model.
Which requirements are must-haves, and how much of the job is code?
You must have
- [X]+ years building and operating production software, including a system you can walk us through end to end.
- Strong programming in [Python / TypeScript / your stack].
- Experience delivering technical work directly with customers or users, in consulting, professional services, a startup or a forward deployed role.
- [For AI products] Hands-on experience building with LLMs. Side projects count.
Nice to have: experience in [industry]; [specific frameworks, platforms or certifications].
How the work splits. Most weeks are about [X] percent hands-on building and [Y] percent discovery, customer meetings and travel. You own the technical solution; [account executive / engagement manager] owns the commercial relationship.
The decision: list as a must-have only what you would reject a candidate for. Anthropic’s Staff FDE posting draws the line explicitly: candidates need not have shipped agents to production, but they do need deep experience building and operating production systems4. Salesforce makes customer-facing delivery experience a requirement and platform certifications a nice-to-have6. Set the years from the level you are hiring, not from the most famous posting; the five above run from 1+ years at Palantir to 8 for Google’s level IV role2,5.
None of the five postings publishes a coding percentage; they signal it through requirements. Stating a split is the clearest way to separate your role from a pre-sales one, and so is saying what the FDE does not own. OpenAI’s healthcare FDE posting says the role owns the technical solution and does not require owning the commercial or executive relationship15.
How should you describe travel and on-site work?
Travel and location. This role is based in [city], working [X days a week in our office / remotely from (states)]. Expect travel of about [X] percent, usually [one week a month on site / the first two weeks of each engagement], heavier at kickoff and go-live. Customer sites are mostly in [regions].
The decision: give a number and a pattern. Every posting in the comparison states a travel figure, from about 25 percent at Salesforce to up to 50 percent at OpenAI and Google6,3,5; Anthropic and Palantir’s new-grad posting give a band of 25 to 50 percent7,16. A percentage alone hides whether it means a week a month or three days every week. If travel is a condition of the job, list it under requirements; Google’s level IV posting places it among preferred qualifications while describing a high-travel role5. State the office policy too; Anthropic, for example, expects staff in an office at least 25 percent of the time7.
How should the posting change for senior FDEs and FDE managers?
Write one posting per level. A posting that spans levels forces a wide pay band, and New York’s guidance says a posting covering different possible seniority levels must give a range for each10.
Table 2 scrolls sideways. Swipe it, or focus it and use the arrow keys.
| Level | What changes in the responsibilities | Experience in published postings | Pay in one published posting |
|---|---|---|---|
| FDE | Builds and ships within an engagement, from prototype to production | 3+ years (Salesforce), 4+ (Anthropic London), 5+ (OpenAI)6,7,3 | OpenAI, San Francisco: $185K to $300K plus equity3 |
| Senior or staff FDE | Owns technical strategy for an account or vertical, guides architecture across workstreams, unblocks other FDEs, advises VP and C-level stakeholders | Anthropic gives no year count and asks for extensive production experience; Salesforce asks 6 to 10 years4,6 | Anthropic Staff FDE, New York, San Francisco or Seattle: $280,000 to $320,0004 |
| FDE manager | Hires and develops FDEs, staffs engagements, helps qualify and scope work before contracts are signed, reviews architecture and code | 10+ years, including 2+ years managing FDE, customer-facing or services teams14,17 | Anthropic, New York: $320,000 to $405,000. OpenAI, New York: $302K to $385K plus equity14,17 |
Both manager postings keep the manager close to the code: Anthropic calls its role a player-coach position, and OpenAI lists writing and reviewing production-grade code among what it looks for in its manager14,17. If your first FDE manager will also carry an engagement, say so. Entry-level variants exist too; Palantir posts a new-grad FDE role at $135,000 to $145,00016.
What pay information does the posting have to include?
If you are a covered employer and the role can be filled in any of the states below, the range belongs in the posting. This summarizes official guidance and bill text as checked on October 22, 2026, and it is not legal advice. The five states are examples, not a complete list: Minnesota, for one, requires employers with 30 or more employees in the state to give a starting salary range and a general description of benefits in each posting18, and cities can add their own rules, as New York City does19.
Table 3 scrolls sideways. Swipe it, or focus it and use the arrow keys.
| State | Who it covers | What the posting must show | Detail that matters for FDE roles |
|---|---|---|---|
| California | Employers with 15+ employees, at least one in California | Good-faith salary or hourly range expected on hire | Range must be in the posting, not behind a link or QR code; applies if the job may ever be filled in California, including remotely; penalties of $100 to $10,000 per violation8 |
| Colorado | Employers, in all job postings and notices, internal and public | Compensation, benefits, and how and when to apply | SB23-105, effective January 1, 2024, calls for the date the application window is expected to close9,20 |
| New York | Employers with 4+ employees, since September 17, 2023 | Good-faith minimum and maximum, the job description, and whether pay is commission-based | Covers remote jobs reporting to a New York supervisor or office; a posting spanning levels or locations needs a range for each10,19 |
| Washington | Employers with 15+ employees | Salary range plus a general description of benefits and other compensation, such as bonuses and stock options | No open-ended ranges; 5 business days to correct a posting after written notice11 |
| Illinois | Employers with 15+ employees, for postings made or republished after January 1, 2025 | Wage or salary range and a general description of benefits and other compensation | Covers work done at least partly in Illinois or reporting there; a link to pay details is allowed; an extremely broad range may raise compliance questions12 |
Pay. The base salary range for this role in [location] is $[minimum] to $[maximum]. [Total compensation also includes equity and a target bonus of X percent.] Benefits include [health coverage, retirement plan, paid leave]. [Applications close on (date). / We accept applications on a rolling basis.]
The decision: say what the range includes. Palantir notes its range excludes sign-on bonus, benefits and long-term incentives; Google lists a 20 percent bonus target and equity on top of base; Salesforce says its range is base salary only2,5,6. For setting the numbers, see the pay section of how to hire a forward deployed engineer.
Which mistakes attract the wrong candidates?
- A solutions engineer role under the FDE title. If the work is demos and proofs of concept that another team implements, call it solutions engineering. Every FDE posting compared here asks for production code; Salesforce’s role description starts by stating that production experience is required6. A mislabeled posting attracts engineers who expect to build, and risks losing them once the work becomes clear.
- “Some travel.” It screens no one in or out. Give the percentage and the pattern.
- “Competitive salary” or open-ended ranges. New York, Washington and Illinois guidance all reject open-ended ranges, such as a salary “and up”10,11,12.
- An AI wish list as must-haves. Naming every framework as required screens out strong production engineers who could learn them on the job. Keep tools in nice-to-have unless the first engagement depends on one.
Where can you find FDE candidates once the posting is ready?
Publishing the posting on your careers page and job boards is the default route, and everything above is written for it. Much of the same material also feeds a hiring brief, which is what Torchlane asks employers to share. For employers who need forward deployed engineers, Torchlane is our top pick: you describe the problem, your team, the experience required and how you will evaluate the work, and Torchlane discusses fit. Introductions depend on a candidate’s background, evidence, fit and availability, and the employer stays responsible for assessment, employment terms and final selection1. Torchlane does not publish a live candidate inventory or guarantee an introduction1. Its hire page asks you to consider both business context and the technical depth the role requires, and notes that senior roles may require experience beyond its program, so state the level and must-haves from your posting in the brief1.

Questions readers ask
Do I have to put a salary range in an FDE job posting?
In California, Colorado, New York, Washington and Illinois, covered employers must, and California, New York and Illinois apply their rules to some remote roles as well. Other states, such as Minnesota, have their own posting laws, and cities can add rules, as New York City does, so check every location where the role could be filled. Every US posting in our comparison includes a pay range.
What is the difference between an FDE and a solutions engineer job description?
The line is whether the person ships production code inside the customer’s environment and stays through rollout. Every FDE posting we compared asks for production coding. If the job is mainly demos and proofs of concept that another team implements, a solutions engineering title describes it better and attracts the right candidates.
How much travel should an FDE job description state?
State the figure you expect and the pattern behind it. The Palantir, OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Salesforce postings we compared state figures from about 25 percent to up to 50 percent. Add whether travel clusters at kickoff and go-live or runs every week, because that is what candidates plan around.
How many years of experience should an FDE posting require?
Match it to the level. In the postings we compared, individual-contributor FDE roles ranged from a new-grad role and 1+ years at Palantir to 8 years for Google’s level IV role, with 3+ to 5+ years in the Salesforce, Anthropic London and OpenAI postings. FDE manager postings at Anthropic and OpenAI ask for 10+ years, including at least 2 years managing people.
Can one posting cover both FDE and senior FDE?
It can, but it costs you. One posting for several levels needs a pay band wide enough to cover all of them, which tells candidates little, and New York’s guidance requires a separate range for each possible seniority level in a posting. Separate postings also let you describe senior scope, such as owning an account’s technical strategy, accurately.
